Iranian football fan ‘Blue Girl’ dies after setting herself on fire

first_imgRelatedPostsNo Content Available A female Iranian football fan who set herself on fire last week after being arrested for sneaking into a stadium dressed as a man has died from her injuries, causing widespread outrage. The semi-official Shafaqna news agency said the woman – dubbed “Blue Girl” online for her favorite team Esteghlal’s colours – died at hospital on Monday after her self-immolation outside a court where she feared being jailed for six months. Iranian women have been banned from stadia when men’s teams are playing since just after the 1979 Islamic revolution, although foreign women have been allowed limited access. “What happened to Sahar Khodayari is heartbreaking,” Philip Luther, Amnesty International’s Middle East research and advocacy director, said in a statement among many expressions of dismay over the fate of Khodayari, who was about 30-years-old. “Her only ‘crime’ was being a woman in a country where women face discrimination that is entrenched in law and plays out in the most horrific ways imaginable in every area of their lives, even sports,” Luther said. Iran rejects Western criticism of its human rights record as politically motivated and based on a lack of understanding of its Islamic laws. World football governing body FIFA, which has been pressuring Iran over the ban, regretted the “tragedy” of Khodayari’s death. “FIFA convey our condolences to the family and friends of Sahar and reiterate our calls on the Iranian authorities to ensure the freedom and safety of any women engaged in this legitimate fight to end the stadium ban for women in Iran,” it added in a statement. Italian club Roma spoke up in solidarity with Khodayari. “#ASRoma is yellow & red but today our heart bleeds blue for Sahar Khodayari. The beautiful game is meant to unite us, not divide us,” it tweeted. “Now it’s time for everyone in Iran to be allowed to enjoy football matches together. RIP #BlueGirl.” After FIFA asked for a timeline, an Iranian Sports Ministry official said in August that women fans would be allowed to attend a men’s soccer World Cub qualifying match in October. Some called for FIFA to take a tougher line. “@FIFAcom. Let’s see if you have the guts just for once to stand against women’s rights violation in Iran,” wrote one person with the Twitter handle @IranLionness.Tags: Blue GirlIranian FootballShafaqnalast_img read more

England tops ICC ODI rankings

first_imgThere was a bit of upheaval in the International Cricket Council (ICC) team rankings on Wednesday following the annual update as England displaced four-time world champions Australia from the One-day International perch and South Africa replaced England as the number one Twenty20 team.Australia lost their numero uno position on the Reliance ICC ODI Championship for the first time in three years, since September 2009, following an annual update which took place on Wednesday.Australia now have 112 rating points and have fallen to fourth spot which is their lowest ranking since the ODI table was launched in 2002 as their outstanding record of 30 wins and eight defeats from 40 ODIs in 2009-10 does not reflect any longer after the update.England, with 121 points, have become the number-one ranked ODI side, leading second-placed South Africa by one-sixth of a rating point while twice world champion India are third with 120 points – just one point behind England. Australia trail England by nine points. The annual rankings update is carried out to ensure the championship tables continue to reflect recent form. As such, the new tables only include results from matches played from August 2010, with older results from between August 2009 and July 2010 being discarded. This is the first time England have topped the ODI Championship table since it was launched in 2002. It is also the first time England can claim to be the top ODI team since January 1996, after the rankings are applied retrospectively.Below the top four, the ODI rankings are unchanged. However, the gap between seventhplaced West Indies and eighthranked New Zealand has grown from six to 20 points while ninth-placed Bangladesh are now only three points behind New Zealand.advertisementOn the Twenty20 International Championship table, South Africa have replaced England as the numberone ranked side on after the annual update. However, the number-one T20 ranking, like in the current Test and forthcoming ODI series, will be up for grabs when reigning World Twenty20 champions England and South Africa go head to head in a three-match T20I series starting on September 8 in Chester-le-Street, England.last_img read more
