“In adapting the original story, we worked with designers and artists to come up with a new interpretation of the cat-like claws that are described in the book,” the statement continued. “It was never the intention for viewers to feel that the fantastical, non-human creatures were meant to represent them. This film is about the power of kindness and friendship. It is our hope that families and children can enjoy the film and embrace this empowering, love-filled theme.”Hathaway’s character, Grand High Witch, is seen in the movie with missing fingers, which is similar to the limb abnormality ectrodactyly — also known as “split hand.” The condition manifests as the absence of one or more fingers or toes on the hand or foot.Anne Hathaway as Grand High Witch in ‘The Witches’. PicturesBritish Paralympic swimmer Amy Marren was among those who called out the film’s depiction of Grand High Witch. “Disappointed in the new Warner Bros film The Witches…I myself am a huge advocate of celebrating differences and especially limb differences,” she wrote via Twitter on Monday, November 2. “It’s not unusual for surgeons to try and build hands like this for children/adults with certain limb differences and it’s upsetting to something that makes a person different being represented as something scary.”- Advertisement – The Princess Diaries star has yet to comment on the controversy, but she told PopSugar in October that she was “really swinging for the fences with the performance” and decided to “put my own spin on it.”Listen to Watch With Us to hear more about your favorite shows and for the latest TV news! The athlete, 22, added: “Yes, I am fully aware that this is a film, and these are Witches. But Witches are essentially monsters. My fear is that children will watch this film, unaware that it massively exaggerates the Roald Dahl original and that limbs differences begin to be feared. This opens up all new difficult conversations for those with limb differences and sets back what we are trying to achieve which is to celebrate who you are!”The Witches was released on HBO Max on October 22. The film is a remake of the 1990 movie and based on Dahl’s 1983 book, which describes the titular characters as having “square feet with no toes” and “claws instead of fingernails.” The new adaptation stars Hathaway, 37, Octavia Spencer, Chris Rock, Stanley Tucci and Jahzir Bruno and follows a group of witches who plan to turn children into mice.- Advertisement – Time for a mea culpa. – Advertisement – If Klobuchar was chosen to join Biden’s Cabinet, Gov. Tim Walz, D-Minn., would be responsible for appointing her replacement. She is up for reelection in 2024.If she is asked to succeed William Barr at the Justice Department, Klobuchar could face another round of scrutiny on her tenure as Hennepin County attorney. The senator drew heavy fire from civil rights activists and Black community leaders in February after the Associated Press published an investigation that raised questions about whether a Black teenager, Myon Burrell, was wrongly convicted of murder during Klobuchar’s tenure as the county’s chief lawyer. The senator had for years cited the 2002 Burrell case as proof that she is tough on crime and of her pursuit of justice for Black communities plagued by gun violence. But Burrell, who was 16 years old when convicted for the murder of 11-year-old Tyesha Edwards, has insisted he is innocent and has rejected all plea deals. The AP report also quoted one of Burrell’s co-defendants as saying that he, and not Burrell, was the gunman responsible for the murder.Others being mentioned for attorney general include Sen. Doug Jones, D-Ala, who recently lost his Alabama Senate seat, former acting Attorney General Sally Yates and California Attorney General Xavier Becerra, according to Politico. When Klobuchar ran for president in the 2020 election, she published an op-ed on CNN proposing the creation of a “clemency advisory board as well as a position in the White House – outside of the Department of Justice – that advises the president from a criminal justice reform perspective.”One of the areas that could interest Biden in choosing her to lead the Department of Justice is her stance on antitrust and her pushback on the tech giants. During her run for president, she said strong antitrust enforcement means looking back at the deal between Facebook and Instagram.Klobuchar, along with a group of bipartisan lawmakers, have introduced the Honest Ads Act, which looks to “help prevent foreign interference in future elections and improve the transparency of online political advertisements.”That said, the Department of Agriculture, which is led by Sonny Perdue, may be where Klobuchar ends up.As a member of the Senate Committee on Agriculture and a former presidential candidate, Klobuchar has supported tying farmers’ subsidies to their cost of production, which would likely augment the amount of money they receive. She also backed greater funding for disaster relief and spending more on conservation programs that pay farmers to adopt certain environmentally friendly practices. She proposed that taxpayers cover a greater percentage of farmers’ premium payments for crop insurance. – Advertisement – Sen. The feeling inside Facebook is mostly relieved as the company got through the 2020 U.S. election without any claims of foreign interference or rampant misinformation, two employees told CNBC. A third person who worked closely on the election characterized the mood as guarded, with continued vigilance necessary against posts that would encourage civil unrest. After preparing for the election over the past four years, Facebook provided users with authoritative information about the U.S. election throughout Tuesday and Wednesday, posting notifications to users at the top of their Facebook and Instagram apps. Numerous Biden campaign officials have taken to Twitter to criticize Facebook’s handling of election ads and its overall impact on democracy, a signal that the incoming administration may not go easy on the company, which has come under increasing government scrutiny in recent years.- Advertisement – Additionally, Facebook removed a network of pages tied to former Trump advisor Steve Bannon after it tried to organize a group named “Stop the Steal.” Among the company’s most notable tactics in the lead-up to the election was a decision to ban political ads temporarily, starting on Nov. 4. On Wednesday, it extended that ban until at least December. The company also paused a number of features in the final days before the election, including the “Recent” tab for hashtags on Instagram and the recommendation of new groups on Facebook. These temporary measures put in place to protect against post-election unrest will remain in place, the employee working closely on the election told CNBC. So far, there is no team at the company rushing to turn these features back on or lift the ban on political ads, this person said. In 2016, Facebook became the national scapegoat for Trump’s victory after fake news ran rampant on the service and Russia used the platform to influence Americans and sow discord. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg initially refuted the idea that fake news on the service had influenced the election, calling it “crazy.” A year later, Zuckerberg said he regretted saying that.Zuckerberg addressed the 2020 election last week during an all-hands meeting, thanking employees for their work, according to one employee (as previously reported by BuzzFeed). Zuckerberg, however, has yet to comment on the election publicly.Facebook has faced plenty of obstacles during the election season. The company came under heavy criticism for allowing candidates to include false information in their political ads, and more recently for changing and adding new policies so close to the election. The company also experienced issues with a policy to ban any new ads in the final week before the election that it rectified just a few days ago. But for the most part, the company appears to have successfully navigated the most contentious presidential election in recent history. – Advertisement – But unlike four years ago, Facebook is not being blamed for the outcome of the election, and that’s a relief, two employees said. Employees know the election process is still ongoing and remain focused, but compared to four years ago, employee morale is positive. No one is putting any “mission accomplished” banners up just yet, they said. But internally, the 2020 election feels like a strong counter to the last cycle, they said. These employees asked not to be named, as they are not authorized to discuss internal company matters. The biggest test for the company has been President Donald Trump, who has been posting unsubstantiated and false claims about victories in battleground states throughout Wednesday. The company has largely debunked those claims by posting labels on them that inform users that votes are still being counted and a winner has not yet been projected. Those labels also include links to the company’s voting information center, where users can see accurate information about the election. – Advertisement – – Advertisement – Mark Zuckerberg, chief executive officer and founder of Facebook Inc., arrives for a House Financial Services Committee hearing in Washington, D.C., U.S., on Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2019.Andrew Harrer | Bloomberg | Getty Images

Oct 20, 2005 (CIDRAP News) – A 48-year-old Thai man who died yesterday had H5N1 avian influenza, marking Thailand’s first human case in more than a year, according to Thai officials and the World Health Organization (WHO).The man, who fell ill after slaughtering sick chickens, had the first case in Thailand since Oct 8, 2004, the WHO said. Thailand has had 18 confirmed cases, including 13 deaths, since the current wave of H5N1 outbreaks began in late 2003.The man’s 7-year-old son became ill with respiratory symptoms Oct 16 and is hospitalized, with test results awaited, the WHO said. The man lived in Kanchanaburi province, where several poultry outbreaks of H5N1 were reported earlier this month, the agency said.Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra said today that new test results had confirmed the father’s case, according to an Associated Press (AP) report. Officials previously said the man had tested negative. The WHO said samples from the man will be tested further at a WHO reference laboratory. The man, named Bang-on Benphat, got sick shortly after cooking and eating his neighbor’s chickens, which had been sick, the AP story said. His son had also had contact with the chickens.According to the AP, Dr. Thawat Suntrajarn, head of the Thai Department of Communicable Disease Control, said, “The people in this area should have known better. They took sickly chickens and killed and ate them. This is extremely dangerous.”Thawat said the father and son didn’t catch the virus from eating the chicken, because others who shared the food didn’t get sick, according to an Agence France-Presse (AFP) report.Despite control efforts, Thailand has contended with scattered avian flu outbreaks in poultry since early 2004. In a report to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) last week, Thailand said it had had 53 outbreaks in seven provinces in the preceding week. The last human H5N1 case confirmed by the WHO was in a hospitalized 21-year-old man from Sumatra in Indonesia on Oct 10. The WHO’s overall case count now stands at 118 cases with 61 deaths. The latest case comes amid growing fear over the recent detection of H5N1 in birds in Turkey, Romania, European Russia, and possibly Greece, along with concern that the virus may spread to Africa. But a WHO representative in Thailand, William Aldis, said the Thai case doesn’t signal an increase in the threat of a human flu pandemic, according to the AP report.”It doesn’t mean the pandemic is any closer,” he said. “The virus probably isn’t any different, and it doesn’t mean Thailand has failed in its control efforts.”In other news, some smuggled birds seized from a freighter arriving in Taiwan tested positive for the H5N1 virus, according to news services. Taiwan has not yet had any H5N1 outbreaks.A Panamanian-registered freighter that was stopped by the Taiwanese coast guard was carrying 1,037 smuggled birds from China, according to a Reuters report. Officials said 276 of the birds were dead, and when 46 of them were tested for H5N1, eight were positive, the report said. The birds, of 19 species, were intended to be sold as pets, according to the news reports.Elsewhere, the European Union’s executive commission said a preliminary test on a sample from a Greek bird had tested negative for the H5 virus, according to an AFP report. Officials reported on Oct 17 that a turkey on a Greek island had tested positive for an H5 virus. An EU spokeswoman said further testing is necessary and precautions remain in place, the AFP report said.In Macedonia, officials began killing thousands of poultry after a disease outbreak last weekend killed about 1,000 birds in the village of Mogila, according to an AFP report today. The story said authorities referred to the disease as “Newcastle flu,” but one official quoted in the story also mentioned an “H1” strain of avian flu. Exotic Newcastle disease is devastating to poultry but does not affect humans.See also:Oct 20 WHO news releasehttp://www.who.int/csr/don/2005_10_20a/en/CIDRAP case count (official and unofficial numbers)http://www.cidrap.umn.edu/cidrap/content/influenza/avianflu/case-count/avflucount.html
Feb 23, 2007 (CIDRAP News) – Tests have confirmed a link between Salmonella-contaminated peanut butter and an outbreak involving 329 illness cases in 41 states, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced yesterday.”Product testing has confirmed the outbreak strain of Salmonella [enterica serotype] Tennessee in opened jars of peanut butter, obtained from ill persons,” the CDC said in a news release. The agency said public health officials in several states have found Salmonella in Peter Pan and Great Value peanut butter. “For four jars, the serotype has been confirmed as Tennessee and DNA fingerprinting has shown that the pattern is the outbreak strain,” the statement said. The outbreak was revealed Feb 14, when the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned consumers not to eat any Peter Pan peanut butter bought since May 2006 or any Great Value peanut butter with a product code starting with 2111. Both classes of products are made at a ConAgra Foods plant in Sylvester, Ga. The company recalled all the products.Dave Daigle, a CDC spokesman in Atlanta, said opened jars of peanut butter obtained from patients in New York, Oklahoma, and Iowa were found to contain Salmonella, the AP reported today.ConAgra is advising consumers to return peanut butter to the store where they bought it for a refund or to send jar lids or labels to ConAgra.”We are truly sorry for any harm that our peanut butter products may have caused,” ConAgra Chief Executive Officer Gary Rodkin said in a Feb 22 news release. “We are committed to taking all reasonable steps to remedy the situation.” The company said it has been working with the FDA to find the source of contamination. The latest CDC statement said 60% of the cases began after Dec 1, 2006, though illness onset dates ranged from Aug 1, 2006, through Feb 2. PulseNet, the national network of labs that subtype foodborne pathogens, detected a gradual increase in S Tennessee cases last fall, the agency said. Subsequently, OutbreakNet, a CDC-coordinated network of health officials that investigates enteric disease outbreaks, then worked for several weeks to identify the food involved. The CDC has reported no deaths in the outbreak, though 51 patients were hospitalized. However, the AP report said the family of a woman named Roberta Barkay is alleging in a lawsuit that contaminated peanut butter caused her death on Jan 30 and also sickened her husband and daughter.See also:Feb 22 CDC news releasehttp://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dbmd/diseaseinfo/salmonellosis_2007/outbreak_notice.htmFeb 22 ConAgra news releasehttp://media.conagrafoods.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=202310&p=irol-newsArticle&ID=1008642&highlight=
