Frozen pipes a concern as temperatures dip

first_img(Photo: Paul Goyette/CC BY-SA 2.0/MGN) WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — With temperatures below freezing, there’s a risk of pipes freezing. There are steps homeowners can take now to help prevent that from happening.- Advertisement – “Frozen pipes become a concern anytime the high temperature drops below freezing for a sustained period. We want to make sure our customers know how to keep their home’s water flowing during the Arctic blast, and also what to do if their pipes do freeze this winter,” says Aqua North Carolina President Shannon Becker.Becker recommends that all customers take the following steps ahead of severe winter weather:Make sure to have a supply of heat tape and pipe insulation, as well as a portable space heater and a hair dryer on hand.Locate and visibly mark the home’s master water valve. In the event that a pipe does break, use this value to turn off water to the home.Make sure the lids on outdoor meter pits are not broken or missing.Shut off and drain any outside faucets including those for lawn sprinkling systems.Prevent drafts in unheated areas, such as crawl spaces or basements, by replacing broken glass or making other repairs.Becker also advises customers to take the following precautions in any unheated areas of their homes when temperatures drop below freezing:Wrap pipes with insulation material or heat tape. Wrap indoor water meters with a blanket. Proper and safe use of portable space heaters can also keep exposed pipes in drafty areas from freezing. For interior plumbing located on an outside wall such as a kitchen sink, install heat tape to the pipes beneath the sink. If no small children are in the house, open cabinet doors beneath the sink to allow the warm air in the home to reach the pipes. When temperatures remain near 10°F, customers may want to leave a very thin stream of water running continuously from at least one tap in their home—preferably the one farthest from the meter. The additional cost of the water is cheaper than the cost of repairing ruptured pipes. If a customer can locate the frozen area of a pipe, open a spigot and use a hand-held hair dryer (blow dryer) or heat tape to thaw the area. If this does not resolve the issue, contact a licensed plumber.last_img read more

Scientists and Technologists Discover Super Jupiter

first_imgAdvertisement Astronomers have discovered what they’re calling a “super Jupiter” orbiting a star 170 light years away from earth.According to astronomers at the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Heidelberg, Germany, the newly discovered gas giant planet has 13 times the mass of Jupiter and orbits the star Kappa Andromedae, which has a mass 2.5 times larger than our Sun.Most exoplanets are discovered through indirect detection such as the so-called transit method, in which a small change in the light emanating from a planet’s parent star is observed as the planet orbits it. – Advertisement – But the Jupiter-like planet was actually photographed directly, using the Subaru telescope on Mauna Kea in Hawaii. The direct detection of the massive planet means scientists should be able to use other means to gather further information about it, including performing an in-depth analysis of the planet’s light, as well as investigating the radiation emitted by Kappa Andromedae, which could provide insight into the planet’s atmosphere.Scientists hope the discovery will shed light on how planets are formed, because Kappa Andromedae is a very young star–30 million years old–compared to our sun, which is 5 billion years old. This planet probably formed in a similar way to ordinary, lower-mass planets, in a “protoplanetary disk” of gas and dust.Source: VoANewslast_img read more

Man U v Man City In theory

first_imgIn theory….. two dangerous words. Chelsea and Man City are trading as joint favourites for the Premier League title, but which position would you rather be in ???Chelsea have a four point lead – but Man City have three games in hand – which, in theory, could put them three points clear of Chelsea if they win all of them.I’d rather be in Chelsea’s position to be honest with the points on the board. No game can be taken for granted and the pressure is always much more on the team chasing. As Chelsea themselves demonstrated when losing at Villa Park – even the relatively straight forward games can throw up a banana skin to trip up on.Whilst Old Trafford might not be the fortress it used to be in recent seasons (Liverpool, Tottenham, Everton, Newcastle and West Brom have all won there this season), Man City face a tough task against their arch rivals and neighbours – particularly with less pressure on Man U as at long last they are stringing some good results together. The Champions League comeback against Olympiakos lifted a massive weight over Man U and probably kept David Moyes in his job and they have since gone on to beat West Ham comfortably at the weekend.Man City also arrive in good form having thrashed Fulham 5-0 at the weekend and are also unbeaten in their last eight away games. Their record over United in recent seasons has been impressive:HEAD TO HEAD RECORD(Max last 10 only)Sep 2013 Premier Man City 4-1 Man UtdApr 2013 Premier Man Utd 1-2 Man CityDec 2012 Premier Man City 2-3 Man UtdApr 2012 Premier Man City 1-0 Man UtdJan 2012 FA Cup Man City 2-3 Man UtdOct 2011 Premier Man Utd 1-6 Man CityAug 2011 C Shield Man Utd 3-2 Man CityApr 2011 FA Cup Man City 1-0 Man UtdFeb 2011 Premier Man Utd 2-1 Man CityNov 2010 Premier Man City 0-0 Man UtdFor City, Vincent Kompany is back from suspension but Sergio Aguero and Matija Nastasic are both on the sidelines through injury.David Moyes is likely to make a late call on the fitness of Chris Smalling (hamstring), Jonny Evans (calf) and Rio Ferdinand (back). His problems are confounded by captain Vidic being suspended and Robin van Persie being out with a knee injury. The draw at around 5/2 with Star Sports makes some appeal – proving once again, from Man City’s point of view, that points on the board are more important than games in hand. That’s in theory at least……RECOMMENDED BET (scale of 1-10 points)10 points DRAW at around 5/2 with Star SportsRUNNING RETURN (MARCH): LOSS 62.25 POINTSRUNNING RETURN (YEAR): LOSS 82.28 POINTSWhat’s your view? BENS BLOG 5 Reasons Why Greyhound Racing Is Better Than Horse Racing

first_img5 Reasons Why Greyhound Racing Is Better Than Horse Racing1) Everything at the dogs is easier: you don’t have to suffer the traffic and palaver of Royal Ascot, the wait between races is half the time, and what’s more; it costs a fraction of the price to go!2) The Dogs is a free-for-all, whilst the endless nepotism of horse-racing is quite simply nauseating. In Greyhound Racing, there aren’t a group of Establishment figures, who are considered, absolutely above question, let alone criticism, and are molly-coddled all the way.3) The form at The Dogs is far easier to understand, rather than the endless waffle you have to endure, at the horses. Normally coming from snake-oil salesmen, looking to promote themselves, by complicating everything.4) The viewing is superb at most dog-tracks. Half the time, its a waste of time, going to most flat race-meetings.5) People who go Greyhound Racing, go for exactly that. The Dogs isn’t a social climbing event, where you are going to bump into one cut-out, sneering-Hooray-Henry, after another. This, unfortunately, is an inevitable certainty at places like Goodwood.Enjoy a trip down memory lane with Yankee Express trained by the legendary George Curtis… In other news:We are in Cudillero, Northern Spain, and thankfully, have already found a tremendous little eatery, in this delightful town.‘El Faro’ does the job, and ticks all the boxes, on every level. It scores an immediate 8.5, and shouldn’t be missed if you’re ever here.On the other hand, ‘El Pescador’, was double the money, had a slow and surly waitress, and the food was very average indeed. 2.Over and out, B xlast_img read more
